In South America, cleft palate occurs 1 in 350 births. Most cleft babies are born to families without the means for reconstructive surgery. In the U.S., the prevalence for cleft lip or cleft palate is 2.2 to 11.7 per 10,000 births.
Every 5 seconds someone is severely burned in a developing country, Burns are among the 5 most common causes of death worldwide. it is 11 times higher in low- and middle-income countries as compared to the wealthiest nations.
When the Hands Across The World team arrives at the clinic, there are 300 or 400 people there, clapping and screaming. It cannot be described. You have to be there, you have to see, you have to touch the experience with your hands to know what it’s like. They work 18 hour days never wanting to turn away a patient. The team is so tired they could sleep standing up with just someone or something to lean on, but no one slows down.
